This bottling marks Jessica Munnell’s first vintage as winemaker for the Mercers, and she made all the right moves on the fruit from this warm and breezy site. Her oak treatment called for a 50/50 split of new vs. older Burgundy barrels, and one-third of the nine-barrel lot was sent through malolactic fermentation. Both help account for balanced oak tones and touch of creaminess on the palate. The nose creates aromas of apple, pear, honeydew melon and pineapple, and there’s a delicious angle to the palate with a crisp entry of lemon, followed by pear butter and more pineapple. It’s a delicious and complex drink that’s capped by a touch of citrus pith bitterness and some butterscotch.
