Elkhorn Ridge Vineyards 2011 Le Terre Foss Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, $29
Southern Idaho resident Charlie Foss looked in the Walla Walla Valley for vineyards among some of his famous friends in the wine industry, but his passion for Pinot Noir won out. So he purchased his 21-acre parcel in Monmouth, Ore., in 1999 and soon began transforming it from plums and cherries to Pinot Noir, focusing on clonal selections of 777, Dijon 113, 114 and Pommard. His first commercial vintage was 2003, and he’s established a tradition with this bottling, which features a more delicate structure than his straight 777 release with tones of dried strawberry and blueberry, backed by fresh strips of Western red cedar, rose petals and patchouli.
