Abacela 2013 Estate Albariño, Umpqua Valley, $20
Andrew Wenzl continues to expand production of this racy Iberian white variety — first produced at Abacela in 2001 — with an increase of more than 400 cases over the prior vintage. Harvest came at 22.4 Brix and more than two weeks earlier than in 2012, yet the profile remains the same. The nose offers huge and tantalizing aromas of gooseberry, mango, dried apricot and lime. On the palate, it is presented as bone dry with a continued delivery of gooseberry, lime, lemon juice and starfruit. Its tingly profile should hold lots of appeal to those who appreciate brisk Sauvignon Blanc and Gruner Veltliner. Suggested pairings include a bowl of clams, lemon wedges and crusty bread or a plate of Manchego cheese, quince paste and crackers.
