Ambrogio and Giovanni Folonari, members of one of Tuscany’s most storied winemaking families, joined the Long Shadows Vintners lineup in 2004 — a year after the collaboration of rockstar vintners was launched in Walla Walla. This eighth edition of their Super Tuscan-style work with on-premise winemaker Gilles Nicault might be their best yet. It starts in the Sangiovese vineyards of Dick Boushey and Candy Mountain, while venerable Sagemoor Vineyard contributes both the Cabernet Sauvignon (42%) and the Syrah (15%). A barrel program of 35% new French oak sets the tone as aromas hint at black cherry, plum, bittersweet chocolate and dark toast. The drink is bold, dense and dark with black currant and blackberry flavors, supported by fine-grained tannins and luscious pie cherry acidity, then finished with Baker’s chocolate and notes of minerality. While the wine is no longer available at the winery, seek out your favorite wine merchant and look for it at fine restaurants.
