Pedestal 2011 Merlot, Columbia Valley, $60
French rockstar winemaker Michel Rolland’s perennial project for the Long Shadows Vintners program remains focused on Merlot (87%) with Cabernet Sauvignon (9%) and Petit Verdot as he chose from a palette offered by Candy Mountain, Conner Lee, Dionysus, Tapteil and Weinbau vineyards. There’s no shortage of barrel influence, aged 22 months in 85% new French oak, which plays out in the dark nose of fresh-ground coffee that leads to dusty blackberry, plum, black currant, pink peppercorns and minerality. The classic grip of Washington Merlot shows itself early before the midpalate turns creamy with black cherry, blackberry and cassis, while the finish brings a stream of dark chocolate. As usual, this is no longer available at the winery, so turn to your favorite wine merchant.

I would like to add that the 2011 Columbia Crest Grand Estates Merlot is also outstanding, especially at its price point.
