Walla Walla’s Wisconsin boys have a tight relationship with the Milbrandt brothers, as evidenced by Northridge Vineyard’s new and substantial role (69%) in this “Special” Cab. The transition to the Wahluke Slope for this tribute to Granddad V.R — plus a barrel program of 55% new oak — leads to aromas of blackberry, black cherry, coconut and cocoa, along with a pinch of sweet herbs. On the attack is a big delivery of blackberry, plum and dark chocolate, and while there are mouth-filling tannins, that combination of dark fruit and Marionberry acidity stays right in step. This was among the 309 wines to be awarded a unanimous double gold medal from the judging panel at the 2014 Seattle Wine Awards.
