Rulo Winery 2011 Syrah, Columbia Valley, $25
By Great Northwest Wine on July 24, 2014
The power of Red Mountain looms in the background of Walla Walla winemaker Kurt Schlicker’s latest Syrah, which he sourced from Ranch at the End of the Road Vineyard (42%) with support from two Milbrandt sites on the Wahluke Slope and River Rock Vineyard in the Walla Walla Valley. Dusty blueberry, boysenberry and black cherry aromas pick up notes of black licorice and vanilla in conjunction with the barrel program of 92% new French oak. Boysenberry and blueberry flavors rule the drink as pomegranate acidity and tannins akin to blueberry skins make for the solid structure found in many Red Mountain reds.
