Trio Vintners 2011 Flash Point Reserve Sangiovese, Yakima Valley, $29
There are plenty of folks in Walla Walla bottling mainstream varieties, but winemaker Karen Labonte chooses to produce brightly toned, food-friendly wines that she enjoys pouring at her tasting room within the historic Marcus Whitman Hotel. Here’s her flagship wine that’s made from renowned Boushey Vineyard, and label’s firefighter theme is a tribute to her son. It features aromas of red plum, black pepper, vanilla and toast, then follows through with juicy flavors of plum and raspberry, backed by a rich finish. This wine picked up a silver medal at the 2014 Walla Walla Valley Wine Competition, but it is poised to show even better by the time she releases it in October.
