Obelisco Estate 2011 Electrum Cabernet Sauvignon, Red Mountain, $65
By Great Northwest Wine on July 31, 2014
Red Mountain vintner Doug Long sold out of his 2010 Electrum Cab months ago in his Woodinville tasting room, but his latest — from a historically cool vintage for Washington — arguably is showing better already. He continues his collaboration with winemakers Sarah Goedhart and her uncle, Pete Hedges, and their barrel program of American (60%) and French oak creates floral notes of potpourri and cherry wood as well as black currants and Marionberry jam on toast. The bold entry brings rich flavors of chocolate-covered pomegranate, black cherry and blackberry, backed by juicy acidity, balanced tannins and a finish of black olive.
