Woodward Canyon Winery 2011 Estate Reserve, Walla Walla Valley $79
The Small family’s 42-acre vineyard about three miles north of the winery in Lowden was more prolific in 2011, and that vintage led winemaker Kevin Mott down a different path than the year before. He could easily label this as Cabernet Franc (95%), and — as noted on the label — he rounded out the blend with Petit Verdot. The theme features dark plum and black cherries with some of the variety’s classic herbaceousness, backed by notes of bittersweet chocolate, tar and Earl Grey tea. This wine earned a silver medal at the 2014 Walla Walla Valley Wine Competition, and while it is not scheduled to be released until this fall, it should follow the path of so many Woodward Canyon wines and age beautifully.
