Gifford Hirlinger 2009 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Walla Walla Valley, $34
By Great Northwest Wine on August 16, 2014
While the Berghans joined the Walla Walla wine industry in 2001, their family can trace its roots in the valley beyond 150 years, and they named their winery as a tribute to those two relatives. This Cabernet Sauvignon from estate fruit is remarkably rich and smooth, starting with beautiful aromas of black currant, cherry, cocoa, toasted oak and baking spices. Its delicious structure continues along that theme with currants, cherries and chocolate, and it earned a silver medal at the 2014 Walla Walla Valley Wine Competition.
