Canadian-born winemaker Sean Hails shows his skill with this white Rhône variety from last year’s historically hot vintage as he manages to keeps the focus on fleshy orchard fruit. Aromas of Asian pear and white peach pick up hints of apple blossom, exotic spices and alder smoke. The bright entry of Granny Smith and pear flavors meets with midpalate acidity, pleasing bitterness and a finish of orange zest. This is billed as their Small Lot Viognier — remember, its parent is Gallo — and it’s part of Columbia’s Tasting Room Exclusive tier, requiring a trip to Woodinville. Enjoy with fresh Dungeness crab, scallops or chicken.
