J&J Vintners 2012 Les Collines Vineyard 4 Boys Red Wine Blend, Walla Walla Valley, $19
Milton-Freewater, Ore., winemakers Jeremy Petty and Jody Middleton each have fathered two sons, hence the name of this blend that leads with Cabernet Sauvignon (62%), backed by Merlot (20%), Syrah (17%) and Cabernet Franc. It’s their second vintage of 4 Boys, but their first featuring the fruit from nearby Les Collines Vineyard. Oak influences start with the aromas of toast, butter and black cherry, and they show up on the palate with flavors ripe red cherry, blackberry, chocolate chip cookie and a moist brownie. This wine picked up a silver medal at the 2014 Walla Walla Valley Wine Competition, which generates scholarship money for College Cellars, and proceeds from sales of each bottle of 4 Boys go directly into their scholarship fund.
