Stag Hollow Wines 2011 Pinot Noir, Yamhill-Carlton, $22
A worrisome harvest for this lot of Pinot Noir ended Oct. 18 when Mark Huff made his pick and entered a 10-day slow and cool fermentation of 10% whole clusters. The barrel program of 10 months with discreet oak allows for aromas of Rainier cherry, cola, moist earth, fresh-cut hay and lightly toasted almonds. That lighter style shines on the palate with high-toned red fruit of raspberry and Montmorency cherry. Elegant tannins, a touch of tar and fresh cranberry make for a pleasing finish. Their tasting room is open by appointment and includes a drive through a portion of their 10-acre designated wildlife preserve.
