Westport Winery NV Message in a Bottle Blackberry Wine, Washington, $30
Nongrape wines make up nearly a third of the successful program at this property near Grays Harbor, and while this bottling includes vanilla, there’s much more to it than blackberries. In fact, there are gorgeous aromas that hint at dusty black cherry and pineapple with dark chocolate, moist earth and minerality. There are rich and persistent flavors of chocolate-covered cherries, while the complex structure is reminiscent of pomegranate acidity and blueberry skin tannins. The residual sugar, while substantial at 10 percent, is nicely balanced. While some may pair this with hot-tub activities, at winery’s bakery, they suggest serving this with a Blackberry Scookie — a scone in a cookie form. And the West Coast Search Dogs of Washington is given a bite of the action from each bottle sold.
