Canvasback 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon, Red Mountain, $40
Napa icon Duckhorn takes flight with Canvasback — its new brand in Washington state — and this combines the power of Red Mountain with the opulent employment of new French oak (64%) often associated with “King Cab” from Napa Valley. The experience incorporates Merlot (15%) and starts with whiffs from a coffee roaster that are joined by hints of ripe blackberry, black cherry, dark toast and cracked black peppercorns. Those barrel influences don’t dominate the palate, which rotates toward ripe purple fruit such as Marionberry, plum and blueberry. Its tannin structure of black cherry skin offers pleasing grip while still allowing for a complex finish of cherry juice and herbs de Provence.
