McKinley Springs Winery 2010 Malbec, Horse Heaven Hills, $24
One of the Northwest’s best spots to grow Bordeaux varieties spans the hills between of the Yakima Valley and the Columbia River, and the Andrews family supplies the fruit for many wineries’ award-winning Malbecs. They keep some of those grapes for themselves and achieve greatness, shown with this wine that opens with a dense notes of Marionberry, black raspberry, blueberry, black pepper and bittersweet chocolate. The attack brings a stream of plum, blackberry and blueberry flavors that carry pleasing acidity and black cherry skin tannins. Suggested fare includes chili and grilled lamb. This earned a gold medal at the 2014 Great Northwest Wine Competition.
