Maryhill Winery 2011 Malbec, Columbia Valley, $22

maryhill-winery-malbec-2011-labelThe Leutholds continue to build upon their winery’s reputation not only by having hired talented winemakers over the years, but also with their long-standing relationships with many of the state’s top growers, and the Milbrandt brothers supplied the fruit for this beauty. Twenty months in 50 percent new oak help develop aromas of blackberry, boysenberry and Jolly Rancher grape candy, joined by chocolate chip cookie dough, lilac and black pepper. Rich dark fruit flavors such as black cherry and blackberry fill the mouth, which includes bold acidity, dusty minerality and sandy tannins that grow slowly. This earned a double gold at the 2014 Seattle Wine Awards, and it’s easy to see why. Suggested pairings include Chicken Marsala, lamb and lasagne.
