The Gunkel family farms along the Columbia River near Goldendale, Wash., and their Zinfandel fruit finds its way into several award-winning programs, include that of California native Rob Griffin. It opens with aromas of black cherry, raspberry, black pepper and lime peel, picking up hints of celery leaf and mild oak along the way. The flavorful entry is akin to raspberry syrup and vanilla ice cream, followed by modest tannins, cherry juice acidity, tamed alcohol and a dash of black pepper. It’s not a cocktailish Zin, instead deserving of tomato-based pasta and meats off the barbecue.
