Mercer Wine Estates 2011 Reserve Ode to Brothers, Horse Heaven Hills, $40
The Horse Heaven Hills began to develop its reputation for world-famous Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1980s with wines off Mercer Ranch Vineyards — now known as Champoux Vineyard — and the region’s versatility continues to grow. This Rhône-style GSM blend of Grenache (40%) and Mourvèdre (20%) from Spice Cabinet Vineyard and Champoux Syrah underwent patience with a 28-month barrel program. The nose is reminiscent of raspberry jam on toast, joined by dark chocolate, enticing baking spices and fresh-cut cedar. There’s a big and juicy entry of Marionberry, blueberry and pomegranate flavors, supported by moderate tannins and capped by black licorice, black olive and black pepper.
