Trio Vintners 2011 Faraway Vineyard Mourvèdre, Yakima Valley $26
The Rattlesnake Hills above the Yakima Valley continue to gain gather acclaim among boutique wineries with a penchant for Rhône varieties, and that helps explain why Walla Walla winemaker Karen LaBonte focuses much of her attention on Art denHoed’s vineyard. She takes her time with this, investing 28 months in a blend of new French and older Hungarian barrels, and creates tones of high-toned red cherry and plums with touches of herbs de Provence and moist earth. Its food-friendly profile leads her to serve this with roasts, wild game, hearty stews and even dark chocolate cake. It earned a silver medal at the 2014 Walla Walla Valley Wine Competition.
