Zerba Cellars 2011 Cockburn Vineyard Estate Mourvèdre, Walla Walla Valley, $38
Cecil Zerba’s roots in the Walla Walla Valley predate the Civil War, and this expansive 10-year-old estate site on the Oregon side of the valley already has displayed a flair for Rhône varieties. This bottling starts with a nose of black plum, cocoa and heavy toast, and it follows on the flavors with black cherry, vanilla and dark chocolate. Its delicious structure can be described as plush with beautiful balance and terrific length. These wines can be found at their tasting galleries in Woodinville, Wash., and Milton-Freewater, Ore. and Dundee, Ore. It received a gold medal at the 2014 Walla Walla Valley Wine Competition.
