Westport Winery 2013 Jones Vineyard Swimmer Petite Sirah, Wahluke Slope, $29
Last year was a record vintage for heat in Washington state, and nowhere in wine country was it hotter than on the Wahluke Slope. Grays Harbor winemaker Dana Roberts turned this robust Rhône variety not often seen in the Northwest into robust release with tones of dark toast, blackberry, pomegranate, baker’s chocolate and espresso, backed by plum skin and juciy acidity. While there’s a wealth of tannins — expected with this grape — they are moderate by most standards. The Fall 2014 issue of Wine Press Northwest magazine profiled the 2012 vintage, and it was paired with the The Bubba, a burger created with certified Angus beef and accented with matriarch Kim Roberts’ boffo Bacon Jam. She even shared her recipe.
