Koenig Vineyards 2012 Sunnyslope Cuvée Riesling, Snake River Valley, $12
Best Buy! Greg Koenig ranks as one of the best in the Pacific Northwest at crafting all styles of this noble Germany grape. His bone-dry presentation from neighboring Bitner and Williamson vineyards in the Sunnyslope Wine District shows an Old World approach, starting with aromas of baked Granny Smith apple, lime juice, orchard blossom and a whiff of petrol. It’s bright, lean and laser-focused on the palate with flavors hinting at Asian pear and more Granny Smith apple, backed by piercing acidity. Those seeking sweet Riesling should look elsewhere because the residual sugar is essentially absent at 0.1 percent. It merited a gold medal at the 2014 Idaho Wine Competition, and for serious Riesling lovers, it’s a steal at this price.
