Columbia Gorge winemaker Terrence Atkins continues to show a nice touch with brightly textured red varieties. It starts in the vineyard, and his 60-acre planting near Goldendale, Wash., which allows him to present gorgeous aromas of Bing cherry, strawberry and cranberry with a blend of exotic spices. The drink is bright with rich flavors of ripe strawberry, raspberry and cocoa powder. Judges at the 2014 Columbia Gorge Wine Competition loved the way the acidity lifts the fruitiness, and they awarded it a silver medal. Those traveling along Highway 16 should check out his log cabin tasting room at Maryhill State Park on weekends through November and year-round in Kirkland.
