McKinley Springs Winery 2011 Syrah, Horse Heaven Hills, $24
Rob Andrews farms one of the state’s largest vineyards at 2,000 acres, and Syrah is one of 10 varieties he grows. The inky fluid is brimming with aromas of ripe plum, Marionberry, cola, sarsaparilla and black licorice. Its entry is rich with dark cherry, plum and Marionberry flavors that are framed by sturdy tannins and pomegranate acidity. They suggest serving this alongside oven-braised duck with fennel gratin or beef stuffed bell peppers with tomato sauce and Parmesan cheese.
