Phelps Creek Vineyards 2012 Pinot Noir, Columbia Gorge, $34
Starting with this vintage, Burgundy-based Alexandrine Roy, a fourth-generation winemaker, took over the winemaking at this Oregon winery with view of Mount Hood. She pulls from 30 acres of estate vines that are primarily planted with Pinot Noir clones Pommard, Dijon 115 and 117. This bottling opens with pretty aromas of cranberry, raspberry and lavender, followed by a smooth and elegant entry of red cherry, pomegranate, ripe raspberry. It earned best of show at this fall at the 2014 Columbia Gorge Wine Competition.
