Troon Vineyard 2013 Foundation ’72 Vermentino, Applegate Valley, $18
By Great Northwest Wine on November 18, 2014
One of the Southern Oregon’s top winemakers, Herb Quady, creates another fascinating interpretation of this white variety that’s native to the Puglia region of southern Italy. The grapes are the product of vines — some planted in 1972 — grafted over to Vermentino in 2006, and it’s presented in a crisp, fruit-forward style with spicy and tropical aromas of banana, lemon juice, lime peel and minerality followed by mouthwatering flavors of kumquat, starfruit, lime juice and a sliver of maraschino cherry. It’s a fun change of pace from Pinot Gris, and can be best enjoyed with fresh seafood such as mussels, oysters, calamari, tuna and cuttlefish.
