Domaine Pouillon 2010 McKinley Springs Vineyard Pierre, Horse Heaven Hills, $26
Columbia Gorge vintner Alexis Pouillon, who apprenticed at Château de Beaucastel in the Rhône Valley, remains committed to creating wines in Lyle, Wash., using a minimalistic and restrained Old World approach. He’s shown remarkable consistency with this blend — an annual tribute to his “Papa Pierre” — of Cabernet Sauvignon (55%) and Syrah from one of the oldest sites in Washington’s Horse Heaven Hills. It showcases tones of sweet herbs, cherry, red currant and Marionberry with food-friendly notes of bell pepper amid a balanced structure of medium tannins and great acidity. He and his wife, Alexis, call this their “favorite red wine,” and it received a silver medal at the 2014 Columbia Gorge Wine Competition.
