Phelps Creek Vineyards 2013 Lynette Chardonnay, Columbia Gorge, $32
Soon after Californian native Bob Morus transitioned from Air Force pilot to flying for a commercial airline, he purchased 60 acres near Hood River (Ore.) Golf & Country Club and along Phelps Creek. He’s devoted about 5 acres to Chardonnay, primarily Dijon clones 75 and 76, and names this bottling after his wife. It shows a profile of new French oak in the nose with a fair bit of toast, which is surrounded by lemon and quince. There’s far less barrel influence on the palate, which brings a pleasant approach of Golden Delicious apple and pear, followed by lemon yogurt on the midpalate and fresh-squeezed lemon juice on the finish. Morus’ distribution channels now include London, England; London, Ontario, and South Korea.
