Lone Birch 2012 Red Wine, Yakima Valley, $13
Best Buy! The Miller family owns and manages 900 acres of vineyard, and while they produce wine for their Airfield Estates brand and sell to other wineries, there’s still plenty of good juice left. As a result, they continue to develop this value tier that’s named for a tree their great grandfather planted at their Airport Ranches site. Here’s a blend of 11 varieties — leading with Tempranillo (27%) and Sangiovese (24%) — presented in an approachable style. Oak tones of chocolate and coconut are joined by cherry and cedar, backed by an easy approach of cherry, cranberry, loganberry and chocolate. Fine-grained tannins and pomegranate acidity combine to give it a medium structure.
Rating: Excellent
Production: 3,130 cases
