Cairdeas Winery 2013 Reserve Nellie Mae, Columbia Valley, $26
By Great Northwest Wine on December 7, 2014
Wines of the Rhône Valley continue to serve as the inspiration at this young winery in Chelan, Wash., and they focused on nearby Antoine Creek Vineyard as well as Lawrence Vineyard in the Frenchman Hills near Royal City for this blend of Viognier (60%) and Roussanne. It was barrel fermented in new French oak before aging on the lees for eight months in stainless steel tanks, creating aromas of orange Creamcicle, dusty pear, alyssum and canned pineapple. The luscious entry leads to flavors of white peach and Golden Delicious apple, backed by lemon juice and citrus pith bitterness.
