Phelps Creek Vineyards 2011 Regina Pinot Noir, Columbia Gorge, $49
Fourth-generation winemaker Alexandrine Roy of Domaine Marc Roy in the Cote d’Or village of Gevrey-Chambertin also takes time to oversee the program at this Hood River, Ore., property. This lot of Pommard clones, named for owner Bob Morus’ mother, the first vines Morus planted in 1990. Roy’s choice for feral fermentation nurtures stunning aromas of pomegranate, cherry and cranberry with floral notes of violet as well as minerality. The drink is expressive with delicious flavors of cherry, raspberry, red currant and cranberry, while exotic spices in the background make for an elegant finish. This received a silver medal at the 2014 Columbia Gorge Wine Competition.
