Cadaretta 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley, $40
By Great Northwest Wine on January 1, 2015
Canadian-grown Kendall Mix returned to Walla Walla last summer to take over the winemaking at this family-owned operation that’s putting in deep roots with its Southwind Vineyard near Milton-Freewater, Ore. Their consistent program for Cab from the Columbia Valley stretches beyond those vines, and it’s built with broad shoulders. Aromas of toasted oak gather up alluring tones of toffee, bittersweet chocolate and espresso that surround dark plums and black cherry. Mouthfilling blueberry seed tannins combine with pomegranate acidity for a big wine that’s worth investing time in.
