Chateau Ste. Michelle 2012 Canoe Ridge Estate Merlot, Horse Heaven Hills, $28
By Great Northwest Wine on January 1, 2015
Ste. Michelle Wine Estates planted its site along historic Canoe Ridge in 1991, and these mature vines overlooking the Columbia River east of Goldendale allow Raymon McKee to craft a Merlot with a tannin structure more relaxed than many in Washington. His choice of 54% new oak — most of it American — produces notes of roasted coffee, dark toast with a fruit theme of Marionberry and blueberry. Suggested pairings include lamb or pasta with Italian seasoning.
Rating: Excellent
