Diversion Wine 2012 Merlot, Washington, $20
Seattle negociant Damian Davis of Rainier Wine Co., works with Katy Michaud — formerly of Covey Run — on this brand that sources much of its grapes from the highly decorated Milbrandt brothers on the Wahluke Slope. That quality shows early on in aromas of dark plum, blackberry and macerated black cherry, with milk chocolate, mocha and crushed walnut. Inside is a rich, luscious and round drink of purple fruit flavors such as Marionberry, huckleberry and red plum. Its medium body and solid structure are capped by sweet spices and red currant. Diversion’s Facebook page includes recipes for creating Red Wine Hot Chocolate, which serves two, and Sangaree. Look for these wines in the Puget Sound area at PCC, Haggen, QFC, Fred Meyer, New Seasons and Cost Plus World Market.
