Cougar Crest Estate Winery 2013 Estate Viognier, Walla Walla Valley, $24
For years, winemaker Debbie Hansen and her husband, David, produced only one white wine — Viognier — from their original Cougar Hills Vineyard near famed Seven Hills in the southern end of the Walla Walla Valley. They proudly present it as a charming alternative to Chardonnay, and their string of critical success with the Rhône variety continued earlier this year when their Viognier returned a gold medal from the 2015 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. Delicate aromatics of peach blossom, tangerine, lime and minerality are matched on the low-alcohol palate, which carries a hint of honey on the midpalate before a cleansing burst of citrus juice and citrus pith. The Hansens suggest serving this with seared scallops. Their wines are available at the winery as well as their tasting rooms in Woodinville and downtown Spokane near The Davenport Hotel.
