Stemilt Creek Winery 2010 Estate Boss Lady, Columbia Valley, $24
Wenatchee Valley winemaker Jan Mathison pulls from estate fruit grown on vines at 1,500 feet in elevation, among the loftiest in Washington, and creates the wines on Stemilt Hill Road. Her blend that pays tribute to her husband Kyle’s grandmother AJ, balances the ripeness of Syrah (47%) with structure from Merlot (47%), acidity from Mourvèdre and herbal notes of Cabernet Franc in high style while also presenting a snapshot of this cooler vintage for Washington. There are beautiful aromas of dark plums, currant, dark chocolate and alluring spices, followed by more plum, blackberry, black cherry flavors on the entry. Juicy red currant acidity pops out on the midpalate, backed by peppery tannins, which create an elegant, food-friendly finish. Their wines are available in the downtown Wenatchee tasting room as well as their satellite tasting gallery on festive Front Street in Leavenworth.
