Westport Winery NV Rapture of the Deep Sparkling Cranberry, Washington, $27
How popular has Dana Roberts’ succulent sparkling cranberry wine become? His folks more than tripled its production after winning best of class at last year’s Capital Food and Wine Festival. Considering that Grays Harbor County produces some of the country’s best cranberries, his success is understandable. The nose hints at more than just cranberry as raspberry, blood orange and rose petal waft in the background. There’s no disappointment to the drink, which brings a huge rush of flavors and a purity of fruit. While it offers a kiss of sweetness (12% residual sugar), the combination of pleasing bitterness, cleansing acidity and a slight tug of tannin creates marvelous balance. At his family’s Farm to Fork Restaurant, the staff suggests enjoy this with Chicken Gordon Gold, and sales of this wine help support the Driftwood Theater in nearby Aberdeen.
