Columbia Crest 2012 H3 Les Chevaux Red Blend, Columbia Valley, $15
Best Buy! One of the Pacific Northwest’s leading brands, Ste. Michelle Wine Estates’s marketing team named this blend for the French word for the horses, a tribute to the Horse Heaven Hills that Columbia Crest is a part of. Syrah (60%) leads the herd of varieties in this blend, which has a healthy backbone of Merlot (27%) for structure. Those who enjoys an oak-driven Syrah will appreciate its blackberry, black currant and pomegranate tones with dark toast and licorice accents. Suggested pairings include a New York strip topped with Rogue Creamery’s Oregon Blue cheese, a pepper steak, hearty tomato-based stews or a wedge of Stilton. The robust 2012 vintage allowed for an increased production of nearly 80 percent from the prior year.
