Carl’s Pond Winery 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc, Rattlesnake Hills, $16
This young winery near charming Gig Harbor has been embraced by their community with placement on store shelves at several grocers in the area and a number of the town’s top restaurants, and vintners Gary Sleeger and Frank Reale crafted this with food in mind. Spicy oak leads to aromas of cherry fruit leather, dusty blueberry and tar with hints of moist leaf tobacco. It’s a mouth-filling drink of black cherry, red currant and pomegranate, backed by bold tannins and bittersweet chocolate. It’s their largest production and least expensive wine, and outlets for this wine include Harbor Greens Market outlets in both Gig Harbor and University Place. They even offer free delivery on full-case purchases if you live near Tacoma or Seattle.
