Columbia Crest 2011 Reserve Merlot, Columbia Valley, $30
Across Washington state’s Highway 24 from historic Cold Creek Vineyard is another substantial planting — Four Feathers — and Block 08 served as the complete source for this bottling. Hand-harvesting from this cool vintage came on Oct. 3, and the 18-month oak program helps account for the dense theme of mocha, black currant and chocolate-covered pomegranate. There’s good grip to the tannin structure, and it’s finished with Marionberry, fresh President plum and bittersweet chocolate. Membership has its privileges, and members of Columbia Crest’s Reserve Club get first crack at these wines — and at a nice discount — but this tier also is available online.
