Columbia Crest 2011 Walter Clore Private Reserve, Columbia Valley, $35
Argentine native Juan Muñoz Oca continues the stellar legacy left behind by his mentor, recently retired Ray Einberger, with this blend of Bordeaux varieties that annually memorializes for renowned viticulturalist Walter Clore. Merlot (68%), Cabernet Sauvignon (20%) and Cabernet Franc from Beverly, Four Feathers and StoneTree — three plantings within an hour’s radium of the Wahluke Slope — come together in this graceful drink that spent 26 months in French oak. Aromas of blackberry milkshake and black cherry are joined by cola, cigar box, milk chocolate and hints of minerality also come through on the palate. Its structure brings grace and style with firm, yet not overwhelming tannins balanced by ripe blueberry acidity.
