Ancestry Cellars 2013 Reminiscence Riesling, Columbia Gorge, $18
Northwest Wine Academy grad Jason Morin continues to build consistency with his Riesling program, creating small and off-dry lots from Underwood Mountain Vineyard — one of Washington state’s top sites for cool-climate wines. Aromas of baked pear pie with cinnamon, brown sugar and rose petal funnel into a rather complex drink of Honeycrisp apple, Bartlett pear and more baking spices. Brightness to the acidity and flecks of minerality combine to balance the residual sugar (4.9%), leading to a finish of Jolly Rancher green apple candy. This wine, first evaluated in January 2015, began to hits its stride nine months later. It earned a double gold at the 2015 Great Northwest Invitational in October. A month later, the same wine won a gold medat at the Tri-Cities Wine Festival. Last year, Morin’s 2012 Reminiscence grabbed the best of show trophy at the Tri-City judging.
