Mercer Estates 2011 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley, $42
Cooler vintages create many of Washington’s most age-worthy bottlings, and this historic Horse Heaven Hills family has produced a Meritage-style blend that will improve with patience. Components of Malbec (10%) and Petit Verdot (10%) from Zephyr Ridge and Spice Cabinet vineyards lead to aromas of cherry, cola, peppermint and clove, with notes of sage, pipe tobacco and cedar. Cherry and mint return as flavors with sweet Marionberry and blueberry on the midpalate, backed by pomegranate acidity and dusty tannins. Anise and clove spice in the finish add to its complexity.
