Best Buy! Seattle-based Precept Wine has an ownership stake in The Benches in the eastern edge of the Horse Heaven Hills, perhaps the state’s most striking vineyard. Willard Farms in the Yakima Valley and Reed Vineyard near Pasco make up the rest of this straight-forward, easy-to-approach blend of Syrah (60%) and Merlot. Aromas of black cherry, Tayberry, dark plum and coffee include a hint of graphite powder. The drink is light to medium bodied with a great entry of juicy Marionberry, black currant and mild oak tones, backed by toast and coffee. Precept’s director of winemaker, Hal Landvoigt, takes the lead on constructing the wines for this brand, which was launched in 1988.
