Stottle Winery 2012 Tempranillo, Columbia Valley, $30
Elerding Six Prong Vineyard in the Horse Heaven Hills has been a steady source of Rhône varieties for Lacey, Wash., winemaker Josh Stottlemyre, and here he blends it with Joel Hattrup’s Sugarloaf Vineyard in the Yakima Valley’s Rattlesnake Hills. Aromas of Baker’s chocolate lead the way for dusty blackberry and dried blueberry, caramel and horehound. The drink is bold, dark and more focused on fruit flavors akin to Bing cherry and cranberry, which are framed by sandy tannins, pinches of lavender and sage, and finished with dark chocolate. This earned a silver medal at the 2015 Capital Food and Wine Festival Competition in connection with the St. Martin’s University Alumni Association.
