Lake Chelan winemaker Charlie Lybecker, a graduate of South Seattle Community College’s Northwest Wine Academy, moved to Manson, Wash., not long before these grapes were harvested. While his focus has been on award-winning work with Rhône varieties, here he works with this food-friendly grape that’s home to Piedmont. Aromas of black cherry, plum and Marionberry pick up notes of toast, Weetabix cereal and crushed herbs. That theme of purple fruit continues with flavors of ripe elderberry and Marionberry, bringing great acidity and touches of black pepper.
