Arbor Crest Wine Cellars 2012 Four Vineyards Merlot, Columbia Valley $18

arbor-crest-wine-cellars-merlot-nv-labelThis Spokane landmark continues to expand and develop new lines, yet the van Löben Selses continue to offer wines of distinction at lower price points. Here, they remain committed to two Sagemoor Farms sites — Bacchus Block 4 and Dionysus Block 16B — as well as Conner Lee and Klipsun vineyards, and they invested in 20 months of French oak. The perfumy nose offers black cherry, black raspberry and mahogany with a whiff of alder smoke and savory notes of porcini mushroom. And while many modern-day Merlots from Washington offer assertive tannins, this structure presented here is rich, complex and smooth with black cherry, purple plum, chai spices and milk chocolate. Enjoy with aged cheddar or a New York strip topped with blue cheese. And for the second straight vintage, Arbor Crest’s Four Vineyards Merlot received a gold medal at the Seattle Wine and Food Experience Wine Awards.
