Armstrong Family Winery 2012 The Scotsman Syrah, Columbia Valley, $28
By Great Northwest Wine on May 16, 2015
History points out that it was a Scotsman — James Busby — who introduced Syrah (and more than 300 other grape varieties) to Australia in the early 19th century, and this small Woodinville winery pays tribute to that marker with its debut bottling of the Rhône variety. The deployment of 100% new American oak leaves a firm thumbprint on this wine from start to finish with tones of heavy toast, dark chocolate and vanilla with blackberry and plum undertones. The structure of bright acidity and mild tannins adds to its appeal.
